Overview

5083 is the strongest non-heat-treatable aluminum alloy in common use, specifically engineered for demanding marine and offshore environments. With a magnesium content of 4.0-4.9% and manganese additions up to 1.0%, it achieves tensile strengths exceeding 300 MPa in the H116 temper while maintaining excellent corrosion resistance in seawater and marine atmospheres.

The H116 temper designation is specifically optimized for resistance to exfoliation corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, making it the preferred choice for hull plating, superstructures, and other components that are continuously exposed to saltwater. This temper meets the stringent requirements of ASTM B928 for high-magnesium alloy plate for marine service.

Both H116 and H321 tempers meet the same minimum mechanical property requirements (303 MPa tensile, 215 MPa yield). The key difference is in processing: H116 achieves its properties primarily through strain hardening with limited thermal stabilization, while H321 uses strain hardening followed by a low-temperature stabilization treatment. Both must pass the ASTM G66 (ASSET) and ASTM G67 (NAMLT) tests for exfoliation and intergranular corrosion resistance. In practice, H116 is more commonly specified for new-build vessels, while H321 is equally acceptable per all major classification societies.

Yes, 5083-H116 is highly weldable and is specifically designed to retain its corrosion resistance after welding. Use 5183 or 5356 filler alloys for MIG and TIG welding. The heat-affected zone (HAZ) will revert to approximately O-temper strength levels (around 275 MPa tensile), which is accounted for in marine structural design codes. Importantly, the HAZ maintains its excellent exfoliation and intergranular corrosion resistance, which is the critical property for marine service. Post-weld heat treatment is not required and is generally not recommended as it can sensitize the microstructure.
We supply 5083-H116 marine plate in thicknesses from 6mm up to 200mm. Standard stock thicknesses include 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80, and 100mm. Thicker plates (100-200mm) are produced on a made-to-order basis with typical lead times of 30-45 days. For plates above 80mm thickness, mechanical properties are tested at mid-thickness per classification society requirements.
