Marine Aluminum FAQ

Both H116 and H321 are stress-corrosion resistant tempers specified for marine use. H116 is strain-hardened and meets specific requirements for exfoliation corrosion resistance (ASTM G66, Grade PB or better). H321 is stabilized after strain hardening through thermal treatment. For most marine hull applications, H116 is preferred as it provides better intergranular and exfoliation corrosion resistance in high-magnesium alloys like 5083.
Yes. Every marine grade plate we deliver includes original mill test certificates (MTC) from the producing mill, certified by the requested classification society (DNV-GL, Bureau Veritas, ABS, or Lloyd's Register). The MTC includes chemical composition, mechanical properties, and any additional testing results (e.g., ultrasonic testing for plates above 12mm).
Our standard MOQ for marine grade plate is 5 tons per alloy/temper/thickness combination. For standard sizes of 5083-H116 (8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 16mm, 20mm), we maintain rolling stock and can offer smaller quantities from 1 ton. For non-standard dimensions or thicknesses above 50mm, mill production runs typically require 10-20 tons minimum.
Yes. We offer precision plasma and waterjet cutting services. If you provide your cutting plans (DXF/DWG files), we can nest and cut plates to your exact specifications before shipping. This reduces waste at the shipyard and speeds up fabrication. Cut-to-size service adds 5-7 working days to the standard lead time.
5083 is one of the best aluminum alloys for welding. When welded with 5183 or 5356 filler wire using MIG or TIG methods, the weld joint retains approximately 90% of the base metal's strength (275+ MPa tensile). The heat-affected zone (HAZ) reverts to an annealed (O) temper condition but still provides adequate strength for marine structural applications. We recommend post-weld inspection per classification society requirements.
