How to Choose the Right Aluminum Bar in 4 Steps

Follow this decision framework to select the ideal alloy, shape, and size for your project.

1

Define Your Application

Start with the end use. Aerospace parts demand different properties than architectural trim or general machining stock. Identify your primary performance requirement.

High strength / fatigue life Machinability / chip control Corrosion resistance Weldability Surface finish quality
2

Select the Right Alloy

Each alloy offers a distinct balance of strength, machinability, and corrosion resistance. 6061-T6 is the most versatile choice; 7075-T6 when maximum strength is critical; 2024 for fatigue-critical aerospace parts.

2024 — Aerospace, fatigue 6061-T6 — General, versatile 6063 — Architectural, finish 7050 — Thick sections 7075-T6 — Ultra-strong
3

Pick the Shape Profile

Round bar for turning and shafts. Square bar for milling stock and frames. Flat bar for bus bars and plates. Hex bar for fittings and fasteners. Choose the profile that minimizes material waste for your part geometry.

Round — Turning, shafts, pins Square — Milling, frames Flat — Plates, bus bars Hex — Fittings, fasteners

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions from our aluminum bar and rod customers worldwide.

We offer two standard tolerance classes: h9 (precision drawn) and h11 (extruded/standard). For example, a 50 mm diameter round bar in h9 tolerance has a range of 49.938-50.000 mm, while h11 tolerance allows 49.840-50.000 mm. Centerless-ground bar with even tighter tolerances (h6/h7) is available on request for critical applications. All tolerances comply with ISO 286 and ASTM B211.
Our cold-drawn bar stock achieves straightness within 1 mm per meter of length, which is suitable for most CNC machining and precision assembly applications. Extruded bar typically achieves 2-3 mm per meter. For applications requiring superior straightness (e.g., guide rails, linear motion), we offer straightened and stress-relieved bar with tolerances down to 0.5 mm per meter on request.
Yes. We stock standard lengths of 3000 mm and 6000 mm and offer precision cut-to-length service. Sawing tolerance is typically +/-1 mm for standard cuts and +/-0.5 mm for precision cuts. We use cold saws and band saws depending on diameter and quantity. Custom lengths between 100 mm and 6000 mm are available. Simply specify your required lengths with your order, and we will include the cutting at a nominal charge.
Our standard MOQ is 500 kg per alloy and shape. For commonly stocked items like 6061-T6 round bar, we can accommodate smaller quantities down to 200 kg for trial orders. Non-standard sizes, special alloys, or custom tolerances typically require 1-2 tons. Contact us to discuss your specific needs — we work with both prototype quantities and production volumes.
Choose 6061-T6 when you need a balance of moderate strength (310 MPa tensile), good corrosion resistance, excellent weldability, and lower cost. It is the most versatile choice for general engineering, structural applications, and projects requiring welding. Choose 7075-T6 when maximum strength is critical (572 MPa tensile) — aerospace components, high-stress structural parts, and mold tooling. However, 7075 has poor weldability and lower corrosion resistance, so it is not suitable for marine or welded structures. If cost is a factor, 6061 costs roughly 30-40% less than 7075.
Aluminum machines well at high speeds: use carbide tooling with 2-3 flute end mills, spindle speeds of 10,000-20,000 RPM, and feed rates of 0.05-0.15 mm per tooth. Use flood coolant or mist to prevent built-up edge. For 7075-T6, higher speeds with lighter cuts produce the best finish. For 6061-T6, slightly slower speeds prevent gummy chip formation. Always use sharp tooling — dull tools cause burrs and poor surface finish. For deep hole drilling, use peck cycles to ensure chip evacuation.
For standard stocked grades and sizes (6061-T6 round bar in common diameters), we can ship within 5-10 business days after payment confirmation. Custom-produced orders — non-standard alloys, special shapes, or large diameters — typically require 15-25 business days. Shipping transit time is approximately 15-35 days by sea depending on destination. Air freight is available for urgent orders. We provide full shipment tracking and can arrange door-to-door delivery via DDP or DAP terms.
